Children's Reading Foundation of

Appalachia KY

Read with your child.  It's the most important 20 minutes of your day.

The Children's Reading Foundation of Appalachia-KY is dedicated to getting that message out to parents and other caregivers.  Research shows that reading with children just 20 minutes a day helps them become better readers, and that better readers are more likely to stay in school and to succeed later in life.

Children's Reading Foundation of Appalachia-KY works hard to spread the reading foundation message through newspapers, radio, and other media and through special events and community partnerships.

Children's Reading Foundation of Appalchia-KY also promotes reading by collecting new and gently used children's books and distributing them to families who need them.

Meet the O'Briens

POSTED: February 23rd 2012
The O'Briens of Northern Kentucky recently brought a load of books to the Children's Reading Foundation of Appalachia - Kentucky. They said that the books were items that their family obtained throughout the years and enjoyed, however now they were no longer in use in their home. So what better way to dispose of gently used books, donate them to others. At the moment the books are at the warehouse being sorted and labeled, then they will be distributed at one of the Read Across America events. Look for an O'Brien book and say a silent Thank You and visit our FACEBOOK to send the O'Briens a message.

POSTED: February 23rd 2012

Each season, the First Lady releases a top 10 reading list for students with recommended books that fit a variety of age ranges. Mrs. Beshear encourages students to read for pleasure, as young people who enjoy reading and learning are more likely to be engaged and successful in the classroom. Mrs. Beshear also serves as a Scholastic Reading Ambassador – in this capacity she encourages students to read during the summer months and donates 500 Scholastic books every Spring to two elementary/middle schools in need of new books for their libraries. Food City Supports the Children's Reading Foundation

POSTED: February 3rd 2012
Food City has been a supporter of education for years. Recently the local Food City started to place the message, "Read 20 Minutes Today with a Child", on each receipt. So in addition to assisting area schools through "School Bucks", Food City is supporting the Children's Reading Foundation. Special thanks to Richard Smith, for assisting with the Cumberland Mountain Fall Festival and getting the message on receipts. Next time you are in the store, please mention the message to the manager, with a word of thanks.
