Maria A. Flores, Las Cruces Public Schools, School Board Member

Mother of three, Maria read to her children up to the age of 12. As a teacher of 4th and 5th graders she read classics to them everyday after lunch.

Terry Miller

Terry is a retired educator and has been a teacher and a librarian for 33 years with LCPS, Las Cruces Catholic Schools and Branigan Library.

State Senator Stephen Fischmann

Steve Fischmann worked for 20 years as an executive at Levi Strauss and Company after earning his MBA from UCLA.  He then operated Real Estate brokerage and Property Inspection businesses in California before moving to New Mexico in 2004.  He currently serves as the State Senator for district 37 covering parts of Dona Ana and Sierra Counties.  He serves on the Senate Education and Conservation committees and co chairs the interim Science and Technology Committee.

Douglas W. Hoffman, Ph.D.

Scientist, educator and not-for-profit manager, Douglas spent twenty years in a research career at the National Institutes of Health and as a medical school faculty member.  He presently supports local not-for-profit groups with grant and fiscal management aid.

Jan G. Reed, Ed.D.

Jan holds a BS and MAT from New Mexico State University and an Ed.D. in psychology of reading from Temple University.  She has had 30 years in public education as teacher, consultant and adjunct professor of graduate studies in reading diagnosis.  She serves as the Volunteer Coordinator for our chapter.

Elizabeth Ann Rohovec

Ann is retired from a 30-year career of teaching young adults.  She is an ardent believer that children's success in reading is the foundation of success in all learning.

Paul Gutierrez, Ph.D.

Dr. Gutierrez is a Professor and Extension Economist in the Department of Agricultural and Extension Economics at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, NM.  He works in applied research and does community and economic development work. He also works with range livestock producers, dealing directly with production, and marketing and financial management issues in range livestock production.

 

Born and raised on a ranch near Grants, New Mexico, Dr. Paul Gutierrez has served at three land grant universities. Prior to his current assignment, Dr. Gutierrez served as Vice Provost for NMSU University Outreach and Engagement, and Associate Dean and Associate Director of New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension.

 

Before returning to New Mexico, Paul served as Chair of the Washington State University Cooperative Extension at King County in Renton, Washington. While serving as Chair he provided leadership and administrative support for the overall planning, development, implementation, reporting and evaluation of the program. Dr. Gutierrez was also a Professor and Extension Agricultural and Business Management Specialist in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado.

 

Paul’s passion is to work in the community—where the “rubber meets the road”, or the hoof hits the trail. Paul has proven to have a tireless commitment to the improvement of the quality of life for all New Mexicans, young and old alike.


Melissa M. Jozwiak, Ph.D.

Melissa M. Jozwiak is a College Assistant Professor and Assistant Director of Early Childhood Teacher Education at New Mexico State University.  She holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with an Early Childhoods emphasis and Women’s Study minor from New Mexico State University. Her research interests focus on building equitable Professional Development School partnerships with the early childhood community and the use of technology to improve educational outcomes for pre-service and in-service teacher learning within those partnerships. Melissa’s teaching and academic interests center on preschool curriculum and methods, promoting positive guidance in the early childhood classroom and supporting equity and multi—directional learning in field placements.  Melissa is a member of National Association for the Education of Young Children, Association for Childhood Education International, American Educational Research Association, and North America Reggio Emilia Alliance. Melissa has presented at numerous conferences at the local, state and international levels and is the author of several publications including an international book chapter that has been accepted for publication.  Melissa has been the Co-Primary Investigator on grants totaling over $600,000.
