Hooked on Phonics

The Children's Reading Foundation congratulates Smarterville, Inc., for the top-quality redesign of its award winning Hooked on Phonics Learn to Read.  Based on 20 years of success, the updated program incorporates the latest reading research and aligns with national and state standards.  And much more!

Created for children ages three through eight, each short lesson - just 20 minutes - uses multisensory activities to teach reading, such as animation (seeing), songs (hearing) and games (touching).  Colorful workbooks guide practice of key concepts, while celebrating every success.  Beloved children's authors and illustrators have provided keepsake books specifically for each level.

Hooked on Phonics time tested approach provides parents excellent tools and training to raise a reader.  It supports them in their dedication to parenting and their priority to spend time learning and reading with their child. Online resources add value, including titles of books that can be successfully read at each level, interactive games and downloadable materials.

Parents decide how and when to use the program based on their child's abilities and their family's schedule.  Parents who are not confident in their own reading skills or who are learning English as a new language will easily progress along with their child.  See detailed information and video demonstrations at http://www.learntoread.hookedonphonics.com/

One of the most important things parents can do for their child is to be sure he or she learns to read early and well.  At home, all that is needed is a willing parent, a child, an open book, and 20 minutes a day, most days, from birth through elementary school.  At school, teachers are responsible for assuring students read at grade level; some are more expert at reading instruction than others.

Hooked on Phonics Learn to Read and other phonics-based programs are beneficial when used correctly, consistently and with a positive attitude that fosters a desire to learn. Special programs or materials are not necessary to raise a reader, but they may be a helpful resource to parents who want to  encourage, supplement or extend their child's learning.
