Sophia K., a 7th Grader at Annie Wright School, is coming of age in the Jewish church and the community at large. As part of her Bat Mitzvah, Sophia volunteered at the Pierce County Reading Foundation. “The Bat Mitzvah used to be about becoming a woman,” Sophia says, “now it's more a milestone to getting there.” An important part of growing up is learning responsibility, which is what Sophia is trying to do through her volunteer work. “After your Bat Mitzvah, your parents are no longer responsible for your sins; you're responsible for your own sins now.” One of Sophia's sins certainly isn't being a sloth, as she's been hard at work for the Torah portion of her ceremony. After learning about the Pierce County Reading Foundation from a friend of her mother, she began volunteering because “doing community service is a good thing.” Sophia says, “Mostly I label books and I sort them.” But Sophia's not limited to busywork. “I did a big book drive both at Temple and at Annie Wright,” she says, and “I raised somewhere around 436 books.” Although her Bat Mitzvah ceremony was on April 21st, Sophia continues to volunteer at the Reading Foundation. “I want to keep on coming here over and over again…even though I feel like I accomplished my goals.” Also, Sophia has learned more about the process of volunteerism and what she enjoys by reflecting on how she came to the PCRF. Because she was 12 when she started this project, it was “not easy at all” to find an organization that could use her help. However, she's glad she chose to help the Reading Foundation because “I love to read!”
