OLYMPIA — The 2008 “Well Fed, Well Read” public employee challenge was a huge success! Public employees from 23 agencies collected over 18,000 pounds of food and over 10,000 new and used children’s books. Proceeds will benefit the Thurston County Food Bank and the South Sound Reading Foundation, respectively.  The goals for the drive were 15,000 pounds of food and 5,000 children’s books. “Public employees really know how to give back big to their community,” said Robert Coit, director of the Thurston County Food Bank and co-chair of “Well Fed, Well Read.”  “The many vanloads of books and food that we received are tangible proof that generosity and community spirit are alive and well in Thurston County.” said Jennifer Forster, director of the South Sound Reading Foundation, a local early literacy nonprofit agency. Participating agencies and organizations included the Attorney General’s Office; Department of Social & Health Services; Department of Revenue; Department of Transportation; Board of Industrial Insurance Appeals, Washington State Lottery, City of Lacey, Department of Printing; Department of Personnel; State Auditor’s Office; Office of Financial Management; General Administration; Department of Retirement Services; Department of Early Learning; Department of Information Systems, Health Care Authority, Department of Financial Institutions, Thurston County Auditors Office, Department of Veteran Affairs, Olympia Police Department/Cops & Kids Foundation; Pollution Liability Insurance Agency; Washington Federation of State Employees, the Environmental Hearing Office, and the Washington State Investment Board. Agencies that collected the most food & books will be recognized at the Public Service Recognition Week celebration on May 7 at the East Plaza across from the Tivoli Fountain in Olympia.
