The foundation was established in 1996.

Its vision is that every child learns to read

early and well, thereby reaching his or her full

potential in school and life.
The foundation’s multifaceted approach

includes education, encouragement, and

literacy and school readiness programs, which

engage and support families, schools, and

communities in children’s learning from birth

through third grade. The foundation performs

this important work because when children

lack proficient literacy and early learning skills,

it has far-reaching consequences for students

and society.
To strengthen its efforts, the foundation

partners with schools and community

organizations across the U.S. and Canada.

These organizations use the foundation’s

programs and materials to teach their local

families and caregivers how to nurture

early development, giving children a strong

foundation in reading and ensuring they

enter school prepared and ready to

continue learning.
