The READ Up literacy program promotes

reading as part of daily summer routines,

so children don’t miss out on vital brain

development and reading practice during

the summer break. READ Up events are

for children from birth to age 8 and their

parents or caregivers. Adults learn new

techniques and tips to encourage daily

reading, and children receive a new book

and take-home materials.
Children and families attended more than

400 READ Up gatherings across the

country during this fiscal year, with more

than 300,000 books given away. These

events were offered by chapters of The

Children’s Reading Foundation, school

districts, and other early learning organi-

zations.

Team Read volunteers mentor struggling

young readers in the first, second, and

third grades. The volunteers read with

students one-on-one, twice each week

during the school day, to improve literacy

skills. The program helps children reach

the goal of reading on grade level by the

end of third grade.
Team Read is currently offered by the

Mid-Columbia chapter of The Children’s

Reading Foundation.
